What’s new in dresses, cakes, flowers and more

This year is shaping up to be huge for weddings (fingers crossed!), With a record number of Canadian couples getting married. We’re moving from engagement season to wedding planning season, which means it’s time to start thinking about all the small and big details of your big day.

Much like fashion trends, wedding trends come and go and are often rekindled years later with a new twist. This year’s trends are to celebrate a time of renewed happiness and fun. (Again, fingers crossed!) Here’s what’s new and exciting in dresses, decorating, cakes and more.

1. Decor inspired by the disco ball

Last fall Vogue announced the disco ball as an interior design trend and we expect it to shine in wedding decoration as well. We have been deprived of glamor for two years! This is not the year to be subtle.

Trendy directions for use: You can incorporate shine into your wedding on every level: sequined linens, jeweled table decors, hanging mirror ball installations, and hanging reflective bead curtains to create a sparkling photo backdrop like the one pictured in the show. Luxury New Years wedding for tennis star Sloane Stephens and football player Jozy Altidore. If you wish, opt for a sequined dress, one of our top wedding dress trends for the coming year, inspired by the Ivy Getty mirror dress created by John Galliano.

2. Champagne Tours

So much old fashioned glamor! This is the way to kick off cocktail hour and wedding toast in 2022. The Champagne Tower dates back to 17th century England, but it truly became a staple of the most exclusive weddings of the 1920s. Now , like all great things of the past, the champagne tower feels new again. Toronto photographers Erin Leydon and Mitch Syer, who recently married, had a champagne tower as one of the prettiest details of their big day. Did we mention that it also makes for a sublime photo moment?

Trendy directions for use: Go as big or as small as you want. Recently, a Dubai hotel broke the world record for the tallest glass pyramid structure with a 27-foot-tall champagne tower made up of 54,750 glasses (ridiculous, but also incredible). The only rule for your own ride? No plastic cups.

3. Colorful flowers

White, cream, and blush wedding flowers have dominated wedding palettes for nearly a decade. But, in a time when we never needed more joy, we also never needed more color. Bold, Bright Hues Bring Energy, Happiness, and Personality: Consider colorful wedding flowers among the top wedding trends for 2022!

Trendy directions for use: Choose vibrant colors and don’t be afraid to create unconventional color combinations. Some favorites to consider: yellows paired with purples and pinks mixed with reds. Old Vogue teens editor and Project track Judge Elaine Welteroth got married at the start of the pandemic on the porch of her Brooklyn brownstone, and we still haven’t got past the exquisite burst of color she chose for her wedding flowers.

4. Feather wedding dresses

Flowers, sleeves and three-dimensional bows are all divine details of the wedding dress, but if you want a dress that totally stands out, go for a design adorned with feather details. This year, designers are having fun with feathers, using them in both a minimalist and a maximalist way.

Trendy directions for use: For a subtle effect, choose a dress with delicate feather cap sleeves or a skirt adorned with marabou strands to create movement and soft texture. If you want to go all out, choose a ball gown with a full feather skirt like this Oscar de la Renta dress.

5. Hair knots

Knots are the new sails. They are all the rage again and are “married” by many classy brides.

Trendy directions for use: There are many styles suitable for a wedding in velvet, organza or grosgrain ribbon; adorned with Swarovski crystals, pearls or sequins. We also love the idea of getting creative with the way you wear your wedding hair knot. Do not automatically place it in the back. There is something modern and ultra-romantic about wearing just one side of your hair. Work with your hairstylist to create your perfect wedding hair look.

6. Subtle statement makeup

With her royal wedding in 2018, Meghan Markle started the no-makeup makeup trend, which was executed flawlessly by her go-to makeup artist, Daniel Martin. The look was above all about keeping things extremely natural: fresh skin, a bit of smoke on the eyes, healthy color on the cheeks, and subtle lip color.

Trendy directions for use: For 2022, we are seeing heightened drama with wedding makeup looks. The arches are expertly defined, the eyes are highlighted with soft shadow undertones and a liquid pencil line, the lashes are amplified, the skin has a glass-like glow, and the lips have a little more color punch. Shades of earthy pink and warm peachy pink are modern.

7. Pets!

In the age of the pandemic, pets have assumed a role of increased importance: it is the bright lights that keep us through the dark days. We’ve always been fans of including your four-legged family on your wedding day, but in 2022 it seems almost essential.

Trendy directions for use: Arguing over cats and dogs to attend your wedding can be a challenge. If you think your pet isn’t ready to behave properly at the ceremony, consider including them as part of your first photoshoot. Make sure you name someone your pet trusts to be their master during the shoot, it’s one less job for you.

8. Creative tuxedos

Daniel Craig wearing a bespoke pink velvet tuxedo jacket at the London premiere of No time to die was a vision. Just as glamor returned to bridal fashion in 2022, it has also returned to the masculine style. More suits this year, gentlemen, we’re back in the era of immaculately tailored wedding tuxedos.

Trendy directions for use: Bring your personal imprint to your evening look by playing with color, materials and jacket, including the exhilarating return of the iconic double-breasted style.

9. Iconic cakes

Since the days of grazing on mile-long dessert tables were no longer viable, wedding cakes have once again become the star of the sweet show. It means going through with your wedding cake design and making it super personalized and unique.

Trendy directions for use: Take inspiration from famous Toronto pastry chef Nadia Colella of Nadia & Co., who had a wedding day brimming with artful sweets. His decadent confections included a macaroon tower and a French-style croquembouche wedding cake made with choux pastry filled with vanilla and hazelnut praline custard. (Perfection.)

10. Mega parties

We’re not talking about the size of your wedding here, but rather the scope. We hope that 2022 will see a return to all the fun activities that take a party to the next level: a lively dance floor, wedding rings, fireworks, sparklers, on-site illustrators, photo booths … works !

Trendy directions for use: Dark! Going all out to make your day totally extra is what we need most – it’s (almost!) Time to recoup the fun times, and there is no better event to do so than on the day of. your marriage.

11. Cinematographic photography

Talk to any seasoned photographer and they will espouse the merits of old school film photography. The medium has been making a comeback in recent years and is particularly on the rise with wedding photographers who love the detail and ambiance the film captures. It also adds an element of spontaneity to your wedding photos – the images are a treasure to reveal instead of being seen in an instant.

Trendy directions for use: Have your wedding photographer take a combination of digital and film images during your day. You will forever cherish the unique ambiance of these photos.
