September’s unmissable design events
From Maison&Objet to Miami, there’s no end-of-summer gloom with this month’s roundup of events. Read on for BOHHighlights from the monthly calendar, including conferences, trade shows and design talks.
Paris Design Week and Maison&Objet
Paris | September 8–17
Paris Design Week returns with a “Meta Sensible” theme, which emphasizes a physical world that is no longer in opposition to its digital counterpart. The biggest event of the festival, Maison&Objet, from September 8 to 12 at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition center, will bring together more than 3,000 brands. The rest of the events take place in three districts: Opéra, Concorde and Étoile; Left Bank; and Palais-Royal, Marais and Bastille – and are organized in partnership with Galerie Joseph and Insight magazine, which will share content through their social media platforms. After the meteoric growth and unprecedented challenges of the past two years, the design industry now faces a changing and uncertain economy and a host of latent questions: How do companies succeed while scaling services? How can they build a better supply chain and reduce the environmental impact of the sector? How should home goods brands operate in a world where the lines between physical and digital purchases are blurred? Home businessThe fourth annual Future of Home Conference will shed light on these questions and more during a thought-provoking two-day event taking place September 12-13 in New York City at Chelsea Industrial, with a roster of speakers who will includes “startup whisperer” Tobel’s Alexa on good entrepreneurship; designate Caleb Anderson and his companion, DeAndre DeVane, on building sustainable businesses that are good for body, soul and bottom line; and AphroChic founders Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason on how to make design history more inclusive with an in-depth look at the heritage and significance of the Black family home. Hosted by Denis Scully and with panels moderated by BOH chief editor Kaitlin Peterson and editor-in-chief Fred Nicholas, FOH’s conversations will shed light on everything from sustainability in the industry to building a healthy work culture to ways designers can leverage social media and their “aesthetic eye” to attract the right customers. What’s up, what’s up at the NYDC
New York | September 14
The 14th annual What’s New, What’s Next event at the New York Design Center will return to its original in-person format this year, exploring the industry’s latest ideas, designs, materials and products and forming the unofficial New York Can’t- miss week of design programming this month in partnership with Future of Home. Dallas Design Week and Texas Design Week
dallas | September 12–15 and 19–23
Dallas hosts a slew of design events in September, starting with Dallas Market Center Design Week on September 12, a four-day event that includes promotions and conversations in its 1.5 million square feet of showrooms. Two additional design events—WestEdge Design Fair and Artexpo Dallas— will take place at nearby Dallas Market Hall in the Design District from September 16-18, showcasing the modern designs of more than 100 brands and offering access to demos and tastings from top chefs in the Culinary Pavilion. Meanwhile, Live with dignitya non-profit agency dedicated to creating homes for families struggling with homelessness, is hosting a month-long pop-up store called Savings workshop. Located in the Design District near DMC, it will feature high-end furniture, home décor and artwork from leading designers and showrooms, available for purchase at a reduced rate from August 26 to September 24. Texas Design Week takes place across the city from September 19-23, with appearances from well-known designers, architects and industry professionals like Schumacher’s Jean Louis Deniotthe carpet company Ken Fulk and Verandaeditor of Steele Marcoux.
London Design Festival
London | September 17–25
The London Design Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with installations, exhibitions and landmark projects by leading designers and architects from the capital. Design London, the festival’s largest four-day design show, taking place September 21-24 in the new design district, the Greenwich Peninsula, will host a series of talks, opening with the award-winning British designer Lee BroomDutch designer follow-up Sabine Marcelissustainability advocate Jay blades (best known for his role in the BBC series The repair shop) and multidisciplinary artist Marco Oggian. The festival will also showcase projects at the Victoria and Albert Museum and host the Global Design Forum programme, featuring an array of international speakers discussing how design can be more accessible, inclusive and sustainable. American Society of Interior Designer’s Gather 2022, the national conference
Miami | September 21–24
ASID’s National Conference features conversations with industry professionals and events across Miami aimed at broadening designers’ perspectives. Chief Futurist of Ford Motor Company Sheryl Connelly and designer based in Memphis Carmeon Hamilton will talk about long-term thinking, strategic development and content creation for social media.
