Renewal deadline, what you need to know – NBC Chicago
Illinois residents who need to renew their driver’s license or state ID card now have more time to do so under an extension granted by the office of Secretary of State Jesse White.
The extension moved the deadline for renewing driver’s licenses and identity cards from five months to January 1, 2022, including those that expire between July and December of this year.
The previous deadline had been set for August 1, but White’s office said it had been extended “so customers don’t need to rush to the driving services facilities, especially in hot weather. “.
“The extension of expiration dates to January 1, 2022 means people with expired driver’s licenses or IDs don’t need to rush immediately to a driver service center,” said White in a statement. “In hot weather, I would suggest residents consider delaying visits to driving services facilities. But if you must visit a facility, please be prepared to wait outside due to ongoing social distancing efforts, which limit the number of people inside a facility at one time. We allow more people in facilities at the same time due to relaxed protocols. “
The extension does not apply to Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) and CDL Learner’s Permits.
The change in deadlines for drivers comes after Governor JB Pritzker enacted Senate Bill 2232 on Friday, which allowed such extensions.
White’s office always encourages eligible residents to renew their identification online to take advantage of this service. Residents can also renew license plate stickers online using a registration ID and PIN, which can be found on renewal notices and registration cards sent out by the state.
Drivers eligible to renew their license online will receive a letter containing a PIN code approximately 90 days before their license expires, White said.
Drivers can check if they are eligible for online renewal on the SOS office website.
Those wishing to renew their ID are also reminded that the federal REAL ID deadline has been extended until May 3, 2023.
REAL ID compliant identification will be required at all airports and federally controlled buildings from May 2023. New REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses can only be obtained through in-person visits to offices SOS and require additional validation procedures. , which is on the CyberDriveIllinois website.
