Interview with Claire Parkinson (the costume designer of “The Politician”)
“Creating a truly timeless show means I can recycle clothes,” reveals costume designer “The Politician” Claire Parkinson. For our recent online chat, she continues, “I search a lot of vintage stores and high end consignment stores for this show. They are not all new clothes. They are basically clothes from different eras. Not all of these clothes can be found in a mall or store. It’s searched in vintage stores, costume houses, and online, to find special things that make it truly unique and timely. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“The Politician” is a Netflix comedy created by Ryan murphy following Payton Hobart (Ben platt) in his quest to become President of the United States. The first season saw Payton navigate the presidential classroom politics of St. Sebastian High School. In season two, he is running for a seat in the New York State Senate.
Last year, Parkinson landed his first Emmy nomination in the Contemporary Costumes category. The designer explains, “Ryan Murphy has created such a heightened world of aspirations, that’s for sure, but it’s grounded in reality for parts of every character. Something really wonderful has been working with the cast to help them find out who these people are. Whether it was inspired by the icons of the 70s for McAfee (Laura Dreyfuss) or very presidential for Payton. In the montage that really comes to life. The best part of my job is when an actor leaves a fitting and is like, “Thank you, I really understood who that character was. “
For the second season, Bette Midler became a regular member of the cast. Parkinson admits, “She herself has such a strong sense of style. We decided we wanted to design a lot of her looks. So we found some fabrics and sketched out shapes for her. We made a gorgeous eggplant purple organza trench coat with a matching hat, turquoise jewelry and a matching skirt. And she was sitting across from Astrid (Lucy boynton) who wore this huge extreme puff sleeve. Looking at each other – two strong women with strong figures.
