Warm minimalism defines this Austin home
This Austin home by Studio DuBois and Elizabeth Stanley Design exudes warm minimalism and sophistication
Judging by the serene country scenes outside this striking West Lake Hills residence, you wouldn’t be able to guess that the family home is just ten minutes from downtown Austin, Texas. . The project, designed in a neat and warm minimalism by American architectural firm Studio DuBois and interior firm Elizabeth Stanley Design, is the Austin home of Elizabeth Stanley, her husband Aaron, their three children and their two dogs. âWe wanted a house nestled in the landscape and somewhat enigmatic from the front, where the thick walls create mystery and privacy,â clients say.
Studio DuBois obliged and composed the calming, minimalist architecture of the house using crisp, crisp smooth concrete surfaces, simple geometric volumes and panes of glazing, which frame the surrounding landscape and connect perfectly with the interior and outside. âThe property is one of the most exceptional construction sites in the greater Austin area – a large, gently sloping lot with panoramic views of the city and space for gardens, a swimming pool and lawns in an area otherwise known for its hilly terrain, âsays studio founder Mark DuBois.
Elizabeth Stanley led the interior design, enriching the decor with vintage furniture and artwork from the family’s personal collection. The result is both graceful and sophisticated, but also quite dramatic – but in a low-key and understated way. This warm minimalism is emblematic of the approach of Stanley’s workshop, which is here executed to perfection. Accents of color appear throughout the artwork, which add layers of texture and intrigue to the interior.
The design uses “a restricted color palette,” says Stanley, where “the black bar is an exception, to add drama.” Elsewhere, furniture ranges from various classic pieces by Pierre Jeanneret ‘Kangaroo’, a Living Divani sofa, Charlotte Perriand stools and George Nakashima chairs to contemporary items by Michael Anastassiades and Faye Toogood.
The leafy exterior is another key protagonist around every turn of the house, with long views outwards dominating the space. A series of outdoor spaces, from terraces to a generous entrance and a swimming pool, reinforce the bonds between nature and this Austin home. §
